Many of us have had a tire light come on in our vehicles during the cold winter months. When the air contracts, it causes a drop in the pressure or pounds per square inch (PSI) of your tire, as much as 2 PSI for every -10°F. You may be tempted to fill the tire up on your own (just to get that pesky light off), but you should instead have your tires check out by your local shop to ensure rotations and inflation is done properly.
While it may seem that filling up tires is as easy as 1-2-3, doing it incorrectly can have financial and safety consequences. Underinflated tires result in increased stopping time, low fuel economy, and decreased tire lifespan. Overfilling can cause tire damage or even suspension damage.
Above is a photo of a tire that came in recently, the result of the tire being overfilled by its owner. Unfortunately, this mistake required having to buy a completely new tire as the expansion of the bands inside the tire destroyed its structural integrity, causing its “lumpy” appearance.
If you have a tire light on, schedule an appointment with us, and we will be happy to ensure your tires are filled and rotated properly, and your tread meets the standards of Colorado’s traction law.
