How and When To Check Your Brakes

Posted by Jim Addison on Jun 2, 2016 9:22:51 AM

How often should I have the brakes on my car checked? There are several things that need to be serviced on the brake system of your vehicle.

First, the brake pads and shoes wear out with use over time.   If the brake pads wear away completely the brake rotors will be damaged. The steel backing plate of the worn out brake pad will grind grooves into the rotor. At this point the brake rotor almost always needs to be replaced and that can be expensive.

Additionally, over time, the hydraulic brake fluid absorbs water and collects contaminants from the brake system. Brake fluid should be changed at regular intervals.

Some brake systems have "squealers" built into the brake pads. These will cause a loud squeal when the brakes are applied if the pads have worn to the minimum thickness. However, most vehicles do not use this warning system

Putting off an inspection and brake repair is both expensive and dangerous because your vehicle may not stop as quickly.

Our suggestion is to perform a brake inspection every other oil change.
