The Impact of COVID-19 on the Automotive Industry

Posted by Jim Addison on Jul 27, 2020 11:53:02 AM

It is likely the role your car plays in your life has changed significantly since the start of the pandemic. If you had asked me in January, I would have said your car is likely used most to get you to and from work. Now, with an entirely different culture and reality, the car has taken on a new place in society. We are using our cars to safely celebrate the things in life we miss, like milestones and travel.

More people are taking care of what they own rather than buying a new vehicle. Across the board, car sales for the second quarter are down anywhere from 5% to over 60%, depending on the car brand from this time last year. While there are deals to be had from dealerships, in general, the uncertainty of this time has created less desire to take out new car loans. While applications for new car loans are down in all groups, interestingly, the higher one’s credit score, the less likely they are to apply for a new car loan right now.

Most non-essential workers are happy to work from home. But recreating from home? Well, that is less appealing. If you have kids at home, you have probably been to a drive-by birthday or graduation party like this one for a local 13-year-old. People are getting very creative, and Cañon City even held a “reverse parade” for the 4th of July, where the parade floats remained stationary while the cars were the ones who drove by!

Our cars have become a COVID-19 exposure free haven, where we can explore and thrive in a way that is hard to do otherwise. As Coloradans, we continue to be lucky to live in this beautiful region, which provides a myriad of possibilities to utilize our cars for safe and rejuvenating escapes. See here for last month’s tips on local travel by car.

So, if you have a drive-by celebration or car vacation coming up- don’t forget to have your trusty vehicle checked out to make sure it gets you comfortably & safely to and from your destination!

Addison Auto Repair and Body Shop has been helping you take care of what you own since 1982. Schedule your appointment for a free road trip inspection and safely escape from these stressful times.
