If you’ve been at Addison Auto with your dog you know all of us LOVE your good buddy. As Erin at the front desk always says, “Your dog makes me smile.”
Recently the staff got to talking about how they travel or camp with their dog and here’s what our staff recommends.
What to Bring
- Collar ID tag - One with your pet's name, your name and cell number and a microchip is nice.
- Familiar items and necessities – bed, blanket, toys, food, treats, medications, etc..
- Water – check out a big pet store for water container options for traveling
- Leash and maybe a longer run if you’re camping
- Sedatives for car sickness or calming
- Cleaning supplies / Plastic bags / Towel
- Pet carrier – If your pet is ok staying in a carrier
Pack ahead so that you’re not collecting everything at the last minute causing unnecessary frazzle.
While on the Road
- If you need to, attach a leash before opening a door or tailgate.
- Stop every couple of hours for a potty and water break and to run around.
- Don’t let your dog ride with his or her head out the window like Ernie Mack is doing in his cute picture.
Bells and Whistles
Harnesses/restraints - Only one of us here has used a harness. She liked the one that allows her dog to sit and lie down.
Cargo area mats or liners - WeatherTech makes floor mats digitally so they fit well and have a nice lip.
Pet friendly vehicles – generally aftermarket equipment doesn’t fit as well as OE. You may want to find out what components your manufacturer has to offer for making it easier to travel with your dog(s). Telling Fido to, “Load up” is fine for a trip to the dog park but consider preparing ahead to make a longer trip more enjoyable for you and your fur-friend.
